Carrying the Weight of Your Childhood Into Adult Life

Parsons Therapy Supports Blue Collar Men, Couples and Farmers, Grief Loss, Stress Burnout

Growing Up When Things Were Never Talked About

When people think about therapy, they don't usually picture someone who understands what it's like to grow up in a home where things weren't okay but nobody talked about it.

A lot of adults are still carrying stuff from their childhood that they never really dealt with. Not because they don't want to, but because they were taught to move on, toughen up, or just be grateful for what they had. So they buried it. And for a while, that worked.

When the Past Starts Showing Up Again

But eventually it starts showing up in ways that are hard to ignore.

Sometimes it's a reaction that feels too big for the situation. Sometimes it's a pattern in your relationships that keeps repeating no matter how hard you try. Other times it's a heaviness you can't quite explain, or the feeling that something is off even when things on the outside look fine.

A lot of this traces back to how you were raised. And that can be a hard thing to sit with, especially when you still love your parents or feel like your childhood "wasn't that bad."

Here Are a Few Things Worth Knowing

You Don't Have to Call It Trauma for It to Matter

You don't need a label to give yourself permission to work through it.

If something from your childhood is still affecting how you think, feel, or relate to people, it's worth looking at.

You Can Love Your Parents and Still Acknowledge What Happened

It's possible to love your parents and still acknowledge that some of what happened wasn't okay.

Those two things can exist at the same time. One doesn't cancel out the other.

A lot of people get stuck because they think being honest about their childhood means being ungrateful. It doesn't.

The Way You Were Raised Shaped You, But It Doesn't Have to Define You

The patterns you picked up as a kid made sense at the time. They helped you survive.

But some of those same patterns are now getting in the way of the life and relationships you actually want.

You're Not Overreacting

If something still bothers you after all these years, that's not a sign of weakness.

That's your mind telling you it never got the chance to process what happened.

Ignoring it doesn't make it go away. It just finds other ways to come out.

Healing Doesn't Mean Cutting People Off

Some people need distance from their parents. Some don't.

The goal isn't to blow up your family. It's to understand yourself better so you can show up the way you actually want to, instead of reacting from a place you don't fully understand.

Why This Matters in Therapy

If any of this sounds familiar, that's the kind of work we do at Parsons Therapy.

Our sessions are straightforward and practical. No complicated jargon, no pressure to relive every detail. Just honest conversations about where you've been and how it's showing up now, so you can start moving forward on your own terms.

We work virtually with clients across Ontario, so you can meet from wherever you are. At home, on a break, or wherever feels comfortable.

And if someone came to mind while reading this, feel free to pass this along to them.
